mixrice è stato un collettivo attivo in Corea del Sud dai primi anni Duemila, che esplorava e promuoveva un modello innovativo di impegno artistico e culturale che comprende attività partecipative come quelle portate avanti con il Maseok Migration Theater – un teatro di lavoratori migranti che aveva sede nel dismesso Maseok Furniture Complex (2009-2011) – e l’organizzazione del Maseok Neighborhood Festival (MDF, 2012-2014) a fianco dei lavoratori migranti.
Per diffondere le attività di queste due realtà, fortemente limitate dalla repressione sin dal 2014, mixrice realizza 21st Century Light of the Factory, a sua volta ispirato a Light of the factory (Kongchang’ui Bulbit) di Kim Min Ki, artista esponente del Minjung, il movimento antagonista alla dittatura in Corea del Sud attivo dalla fine degli anni Settanta. Nel 1979, durante la dittatura e contestualmente alle attività di resistenza dei movimenti democratici e sindacali, Kim Min Ki e alcuni gruppi di operai attivisti registrarono quest’opera radiofonica e la fecero circolare clandestinamente nelle fabbriche. L’opera descrive le lotte dei lavoratori sotto il regime, concentrandosi soprattutto sulle lavoratrici che stavano in quel momento organizzando un sindacato. Ispirata a eventi reali come lo sciopero della Y.H. Trading Company del 1978-79, la musica registrata mescolava vari stili, diffondendo il messaggio attraverso registrazioni amatoriali su audiocassetta.
La realtà degli operai in quest'opera non è molto diversa da quella affrontata dai lavoratori contemporanei. mixrice parte da questo assunto per adattare l’opera degli anni Settanta ai giorni nostri, coinvolgendo un cast eterogeneo fatto di lavoratori precari, dipendenti vittima di licenziamento e migranti. 21st Century Light of the Factory collega così le esperienze antagoniste degli anni Settanta alle attività del Maseok Migration Theater, creando connessioni tra generazioni e contesti professionali diversi, lavorando sulla creazione di comunità e amplificando voci spesso emarginate dal discorso tradizionale.
mixrice (2002-2021) è stato un collettivo artistico attivo in Corea del Sud. Ha storicamente esplorato le tracce, i processi, i percorsi e le memorie che nascono dall’atto migratorio, attraverso fotografia, video, animazione, murales e attività partecipative in collaborazione con i lavoratori immigrati e le loro comunità, come quella con il Maseok Migration Theater che sono state portate avanti dal 2006. Negli ultimi anni di attività si sono dedicati al processo di “migrazione” delle piante. Tra le principali mostre: Michikusa: Walks with the Unknown (Art Tower Mito, 2020); Cosmopolis #1: Collective Intelligence (Centre Pompidou, Parigi, 2017); Korea Artist Prize, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul) e Sharjah Biennial.
mixrice was a collective active in South Korea since the early 2000s, exploring and promoting an innovative model of artistic and cultural engagement that includes participatory activities such as those carried out with the Maseok Migration Theatre – a migrant workers’ theatre based in the decommissioned Maseok Furniture Complex (2009-2011) – and the organisation of the Maseok Neighbourhood Festival (MDF, 2012-2014) alongside migrant workers.
To disseminate the activities of these two realities, which have been severely restricted by repression since 2014, mixrice realised 21st Century Light of the Factory, inspired by Light of the factory (Kongchang’ui Bulbit) by Kim Min Ki, an artist exponent of the Minjung, the movement antagonistic to the dictatorship in South Korea active since the late 1970s. In 1979, Kim Min Gi and activists released this clandestine radio play to mobilise South Korean factory workers during democracy and labour movements. It depicted workers’ struggles under the authoritarian regime, focusing on female workers organising a union. Inspired by real events like the 1978-79 Y.H. Trading Company strike, its music blended various styles, spreading its message via homemade cassette recordings.
The reality of the workers in this work is not very different from that faced by contemporary workers. mixrice starts from this assumption to adapt the 1970s work to the present days, involving a diverse cast including temporary workers, fired employees, and migrants. 21st Century Light of the Factory thus links the antagonist experiences of the 1970s to the activities of the Maseok Migration Theatre, creating connections between different generations and professional backgrounds, working on community building and amplifying voices often marginalised by mainstream discourse.
mixrice (2002-2021) was an art collective active in South Korea. It has historically explored the traces, processes, pathways and memories that arise from the act of migration, through photography, video, animation, murals and participatory activities in collaboration with migrant workers and their communities, such as the Maseok Migration Theatre that have been carried out since 2006. In recent years, they have dedicated themselves to the process of plant migration. Among mixrice’s major exhibitions: Michikusa: Walks with the Unknown (Art Tower Mito, 2020); Cosmopolis #1: Collective Intelligence (Centre Pompidou, Paris, 2017); Korea Artist Prize, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul), and Sharjah Biennial.
