Inventory 2021 dell'artista Pınar Öğrenci è una rivisitazione del film Inventur-Metzstrasse 11, girato dal regista jugoslavo Želimir Žilnik a Monaco di Baviera nel 1975. In questa seconda versione, ambientata a Chemnitz e girata nel 2021, Öğrenci offre una prospettiva alternativa sulla vita di persone di diversa provenienza ed età che sono immigrate in Germania. Come nell'opera originale, le riprese avvengono all'interno dell'edificio che presumibilmente queste persone abitano, ed esse si presentano via via di fronte alla telecamera per descrivere brevemente la propria esperienza.
Tuttavia, a differenza dell’opera di Želimir Žilnik, che illustrava un quadro inospitale per la maggioranza degli stranieri, caratterizzato da un progressivo peggioramento delle loro condizioni, rappresentato metaforicamente dal movimento di discesa delle scale, Inventory 2021 illustra una realtà di benessere e graduale miglioramento nella vita di chi è immigrato. I soggetti intervistati si dichiarano soddisfatti della loro quotidianità a Chemnitz, riescono a percepirla come una sistemazione permanente anziché precaria e, una volta concluso il racconto, lasciano la scena salendo le scale anziché scendendole.
In chiave decoloniale e antirazzista, il film di Öğrenci promuove dunque un approccio positivo all’immigrazione, riformulando il concetto di casa, non più legato solo alle circostanze contingenti ma luogo di vita autentica e radicata anche per chi si trova a vivere in un contesto diverso dal proprio. Con Inventory 2021 Öğrenci trasmette la fiducia nella capacità di integrazione e inclusione di chi un tempo era considerato estraneo, sottolineando il potenziale arricchimento della diversità nel mondo contemporaneo.
Pınar Öğrenci (Turchia, 1973) vive e lavora a Berlino. Dagli anni Novanta scrive di architettura e arte contemporanea in riviste come Agos, Radikal, ArtUnlimited. Nel 2010 ha fondato MARSistanbul. La sua prima personale all’estero, A Gentle Breeze Passed Over Us, è stata realizzata al Kunst Haus-Hundertwasser Museum di Vienna nel 2017. Ha esposto in numerosi musei e istituzioni artistiche tra cui documenta 15, Berlinische Galerie, Biennale di Gwangju, Biennale di Atene, Survival Kit (Riga), Tensta Konsthall (Stoccolma), MAXXI (Roma), SALT Galata (Istanbul). Ha vinto il Premio Speciale della Giuria al Documentarist Film Festival di Istanbul (2021), il Premio d’Arte Villa Romana (2023) ed è stata nominata per il Premio Kunst a Brema (2022). La sua pratica artistica, influenzata dalla sua formazione in architettura, si concentra su opere e installazioni video che esplorano migrazioni forzate, offrendo una visione decoloniale e femminista del contemporaneo.
Inventory 2021 by artist Pınar Öğrenci is a remake of the original film Inventur-Metzstrasse 11 shot by Yugoslav director Želimir Žilnik in Munich in 1975. In this second version of his film, set in the city of Chemnitz and shot in 2021, Öğrenci offers an alternative look at the situation of people of different genders, ages and ethnicities living in Germany as immigrants. As in the original work, the filming takes place inside the building where the people are supposedly staying, who, one after the other, introduce themselves to the camera by briefly telling who they are and how they live their situation as immigrants.
Pınar Öğrenci, however, offers a contrary perspective to that of Želimir Žilnik: the 1975 film depicted an inhospitable and difficult situation for most of the foreigners, foreshadowing a progressive decay of their conditions, metaphorically rendered through the movement of descending stairs. In contrast, Inventory 2021 illustrates a situation of well-being and progressive improvement in the lives of the immigrants. The interviewees declare themselves satisfied with their daily life in Chemnitz, they manage to perceive it as permanent rather than precarious and, once their story is over, they leave the scene by climbing the stairs rather than descending them.
With a decolonial and anti-racist slant, Öğrenci’s film thus promotes a positive approach to immigration, reformulating the concept of home, no longer linked only to contingent circumstances but a place of authentic and rooted life even for those who find themselves living in a context different from their own. With Inventory 2021, Öğrenci conveys confidence in the capacity for integration and inclusion of what was once considered foreign, emphasising the enriching potential of diversity in the contemporary world.
Pınar Öğrenci (Turkey, 1973) lives and works in Berlin. Since the late 1990s she has written extensively on architecture and contemporary art in magazines such as Agos, Radikal, ArtUnlimited. In 2010, she founded the art initiative MARSistanbul. Her first solo exhibition abroad, A Gentle Breeze Passed Over Us, was held at the Kunst Haus-Hundertwasser Museum in Vienna in 2017. Her works have been exhibited widely in museums and art institutions including documenta15, Berlinische Galerie, the Gwangju Biennale, the Athens Biennale, Survival Kit (Riga), Tensta Konsthall (Stockholm), MAXXI Museum (Rome), SALT Galata (Istanbul). She received the Special Jury Prize of the Documentarist Film Festival (2021), the Villa Romana Art Prize (2023) and she is nominated for the Kunst Prize in Bremen (2022). Her training in architecture influences her artistic practice based mainly on video works and installations that trace the geographies of forced displacement, offering a reinterpretation of the contemporary through a decolonial and feminist gaze.
